There’s a reason so many visitors come to Pismo Beach for a vacation and leave wondering if they should stay forever.
Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, California’s Central Coast offers beaches, vineyards, charming towns, hiking trails, fresh seafood, and a slower pace of life that’s hard to find elsewhere.
If you’re planning a trip or thinking about relocating, this 7-day Central Coast itinerary will help you experience the very best of Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo County, and the surrounding beach communities.
Created by local Central Coast Realtor Kyle Perhac, who helps buyers relocate, invest, and discover life on the coast. Special contributions by his other half, local dietitian Ginger Cochran, MS, RDN, CDCES.
Day 1: Best Things to Do in Pismo Beach
Pismo Beach is one of California’s most iconic beach towns, known for its surf culture, walkable downtown, and scenic coastline.
Where to stay in Pismo Beach
SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel offers oceanfront views, direct beach access, pools, and family-friendly amenities.
Morning
Breakfast at Honeymoon Cafe.
Afternoon
Walk downtown Pismo Beach:
- Pismo Pier
- Boutique shopping
- Surf stores
- Monarch Butterfly Grove (seasonal)
Dinner
Giuseppe’s Cucina Italiana. Fair warning, Giuseppe’s does not take reservations. There is usually a 30-60 minute wait. I recommend getting there early and taking a walk around downtown while you wait. If you don’t want to wait, you can head to Giuseppe’s to-go location next door and grab a pizza and salad, then go to your room to eat or even stay on the beach.
Day 2: Shell Beach Local Guide
Shell Beach is one of the most desirable neighborhoods on the Central Coast.
Think ocean bluff homes, quiet streets, tide pools, and incredible sunsets. It spans from Dinosaur Park to El Portal Drive.
Morning
Breakfast at Zorro’s Cafe & Cantina is a popular destination for locals during the week and tourists on the weekend. Expect a line if you are going there on the weekend.
Must See
- Dinosaur Caves Park
- Bluff walks
- Tide pools (check the tide before you go. Pick a time with the lowest tide. Tide Chart Here)
- Ocean wildlife viewing
Relaxation
Private mineral tubs at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort are the place for extra relaxation. Reserve your tub as far in advance as you can. For weekday reservations, a few days’ notice can be enough. For holidays or busy weekends, I recommend booking weeks in advance for your favorite time slot.
Day 3: Avila Beach Itinerary
Avila Beach is known for warmer weather, calm water, and sunny beach days. If it’s foggy during your stay in Pismo Beach, I recommend heading to Avila Beach.

- Walk the promenade

- Bike Bob Jones Trail. Rent bikes here.

Mersea’s Seafood Restaurant a great place for seafood on the Port San Luis Pier.

Day 5: Highway 1 North Coast Drive
One of the most memorable day trips from Pismo Beach is heading north on scenic California State Route 1. As you leave the South County beaches behind, the landscape shifts into dramatic coastline, fishing towns, volcanic peaks, rolling ranch land, and some of the most beautiful ocean views in California.
Take your time today. This stretch of road is meant to be enjoyed slowly.
First Stop: Morro Bay
The waterfront town of Morro Bay is centered around the famous Morro Rock, a towering volcanic plug formed millions of years ago and one of the iconic “Nine Sisters” volcanic peaks that run through San Luis Obispo County.
What to Do in Morro Bay
- Walk the Embarcadero waterfront shops and restaurants
- Watch sea otters floating in the harbor wrapped in kelp
- Spot harbor seals and coastal birds
- Grab coffee with harbor views
- Browse local galleries and surf shops
Local Tip
Morning is often the calmest and clearest time to visit. Fog can burn off later, revealing beautiful blue water and views.
Optional Nature Stop
Visit nearby Morro Bay State Park for easy walking trails, estuary views, and birdwatching.
Second Stop: Cayucos
Just north of Morro Bay is Cayucos, one of the last true old-school California beach towns. Surf culture, ranching roots, wooden pier charm, and relaxed local energy still define this community.
It feels like stepping into a simpler version of coastal California.
Lunch at Hidden Kitchen
A must-stop known for creative blue corn waffles, tacos, and fresh ingredients. It has developed a loyal following for good reason.
After Lunch
- Walk the beach barefoot
- Visit the historic Cayucos Pier
- Browse antique shops and local boutiques
- Grab an ice cream or coffee downtown
Why Buyers Love Cayucos
Many people searching for second homes love Cayucos because it still feels authentic, peaceful, and less commercialized than many California beach towns.
Third Stop: Cambria
As you continue north, the scenery changes again. Pine trees begin meeting the ocean, and the air becomes cooler and wilder. Cambria is one of the most charming towns on the Central Coast, known for artistic spirit, cottage architecture, and natural beauty.
Walk Moonstone Beach
Moonstone Beach is famous for:
- Driftwood-lined shoreline
- Boardwalk paths with ocean views
- Tide pools at low tide
- Sunset walks
- Moonstones are occasionally found along the shore
Explore Town
Cambria’s East and West Village areas offer:
- Art galleries
- Wine tasting rooms
- Boutique shopping
- Cozy cafes
- Historic inns
Optional Dinner Stop
If you’d like to stay for dinner before returning south, Cambria offers excellent farm-to-table dining and intimate coastal restaurants like Robyn’s Restaurant.
